Burlington has a packed schedule from July 17 to 23, but the week begins under a noticeable blanket of wildfire smoke. Several outdoor festivals, concerts and movie nights are still planned, so checking both the event status and air quality before leaving home will be important.

Wildfire Smoke Is Affecting Burlington

Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario has moved across southern Ontario, creating poor visibility and unhealthy air in Burlington. The city’s Air Quality Health Index reached the high-risk range Friday morning, with very high-risk conditions forecast for Friday and Friday night. High-risk air quality may continue into Saturday.

This is not only a concern for people with asthma or other health conditions. During periods of heavy smoke, everyone can be affected. Outdoor exercise should be reduced or moved indoors, especially for children, seniors, pregnant people and anyone with heart or breathing problems.

If the smoke remains heavy, keep windows closed, run air conditioning on recirculation when possible and take breaks inside a building with filtered air. A properly fitted N95-style mask can also reduce exposure to fine smoke particles when time outdoors cannot be avoided.

Conditions may begin improving after Saturday’s showers and thunderstorms, although smoke forecasts can change quickly. Check the AQHI shortly before attending any outdoor event, even if the sky appears clearer.

Burlington Waterfront Festival

The Burlington Waterfront Festival takes over Spencer Smith Park for three days with live music, a midway, food vendors, artisan booths and family activities.

Friday’s performers include Sister Boombox at 5:30 p.m. and Pearl Jam tribute band Pearl Jamming at 8 p.m. Festival hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

This is the largest event in Burlington this weekend, but it is also almost entirely outdoors. Visitors should check for schedule changes and monitor the air quality before spending several hours at the waterfront.

SIP Burlington Comes to Village Square

Saturday, July 18

SIP Burlington is bringing food, live entertainment and festival activities to Village Square. The daytime portion runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with free admission and performances by Damn Animal and Shyster.

The evening program runs from 6 to 11 p.m. with DJs and paid admission. The evening portion is restricted to guests aged 19 and older. Because Village Square is outdoors, organizers may adjust plans if smoke or thunderstorms become severe.

The Burlington Model Railway Club is holding a free public viewing session featuring operating layouts in N, HO and G scales. The indoor displays provide a useful alternative if wildfire smoke makes extended outdoor activities uncomfortable.

The outdoor garden railway operates weather permitting. Donations are accepted, but admission is free.

Music, Coffee And Community at Toast

Burlington’s Concerts in the Park series continues with two free performances at the Central Park Bandshell:

The Barr Brothers at Royal Botanical Gardens

The Barr Brothers bring their Let It Hiss Tour to Hendrie Park, joined by Canadian singer-songwriter Hannah Georgas. Georgas performs at 8 p.m., followed by The Barr Brothers at 9 p.m.
